Alison Meek (b.1959)
I currently live and work in London. I studied Fine Art at St Martin’s School of Art and Hornsey College of Art from 1977 to 1983 then travelled and worked in Asia and Australia for many years before returning to London in 1994. Travel inspires a love of light and colour, a key feature of my work, reflecting geographical, historical and political landscapes, as seen in the US and South East Asian works. I use colours, shapes and their relationships in a personal alphabet, illustrating thoughts, feelings and wider issues, allowing viewers an individualised interpretation. I use mainly soft pastels on handmade paper, giving a range of colours of intensity and subtlety.
I have exhibited repeatedly in many London venues including the Brick Lane Gallery, Lauderdale House (Highgate), the Ply Gallery (Crouch End) and University College Hospital (Euston). I have also been successful in on-line exhibitions such as light, space, time art and the Artists’ Web. My work is in collections in London, the Middle East and Australia where I was a founding member of the Newtown Art Market and exhibited regularly at the Artist’s Eye Gallery, Sydney with cards sold at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
I studied Art History at Sotheby’s in 2011 and taught a wide range of classroom and gallery-based courses as a member of the Association of Art Historians, ICOM (through working at the V&A, London) and a-n.
